The best backgrounds for portrait shots are plain backgrounds. So, pay attention to your subject’s surroundings when looking through the viewfinder.

If you see a pole “growing” from the person’s head or a garbage bin next to them, change the angle of the shot or simply ask the person to step aside. Keep the background as clean as you can.
